Our program requires funding due to the lack of educational resources that are available for children in the Milwaukee community. Summer learning loss for students who come from low-income communities, compared to students who are from middle-class communities indicate a pervasive pattern that consistently shows students who are not engaged in learning activities during the course of the summer, fall behind at least 2 months of reading achievement, and by the time they are in the 5th grade they are at least 3 grade levels behind their peers who are from more affluent environments. A 6-week program can reduce summer learning loss significantly and contribute to better reading performance for students who are at a disadvantage. A child must become literate; this increases the chances of gaining employment that can support and sustain a family. Literacy is extremely essential because it offers everyone the opportunity to have a productive life.
Volunteer
Labor for Learning is seeking dedicated individuals to contribute to our efforts to implement a reading curriculum and other engaging art activities. If you love working with children ages 4-12 years old; It would be our absolute pleasure to hear from you. Labor for Learning After school program will be held at Stuart Elementary School in Milwaukee.
